Tips for Using This Web Site

The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services web site has many features intended to improve your browsing experience.

External Links ((External Link))

We provide many links to external web sites for your convenience. Most of these links will be followed by an icon ((External Link)) to indicate that the link goes to another web site and a new browser window will open this website.

On occasion, we will provide links that will open in a new browser window within our website. Most of these links will be followed by an icon ((External Link)) to indicate that a new browser window will open.

Sometimes external pages we link to are moved or removed creating a broken link. If you think you have come across a broken link on our Web site please let us know.

Rich Media & Devices

Some portions of this site use the Adobe Flash plug-in for your javascript enabled browser. If you do not have either of these browser features, you will see our our website in plain html for optimal screen reader and alternate browsing device compatibility. If you do have these browser features, our website will display in a rich media format.

Document Icons

If a document is available in a format other than HTML, there will usually be an icon after the link to indicate the format as well as the file size. The following are examples of document icons you might see:

  • PDF Document Icon indicates an Adobe PDF file.
  • Microsoft Word Document Icon indicates a Microsoft Word Document and in some cases a Word Document Template (.dot).
  • Mircosoft Excel Spreadsheet indicates a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet.
  • Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation indicates a Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation.
  • Text Document Icon or Rich Text File Icon indicates a Text Document or a Rich Text File.

If you require a document in a different file format than we currently provide, you can request it from us and we will try to accommodate you. Free viewers are also available for many of the file types we use. If you are having trouble viewing any of the above file types you may need to install additional software:

The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services is not responsible for the software listed above or your use of it. The links above are provided for your convenience and does not in any way constitute an endorsement of the software or companies.

Document File Size

In some cases, documents of the above file types will also display the size of the file after the icon. This can help you determine how long it will take for a larger file to download. For example, under ideal conditions, a 500KB file will take a little over one minute to download on a 56k dial-up connection. A 1MB file will take around two and a half minutes on a 56k dial-up connection.
