National Data Privacy Day
January 28, 2012
Data Privacy Day is an international event that occurs every January 28th. The purpose of Data Privacy Day is to raise awareness and promote privacy education to state and local government, academia, businesses, and citizens.
As part of the Data Privacy Day commemoration, the NYS Office of Cyber Security and the Department of State's Division of Consumer Protection are providing a wealth of resources relating to information privacy, identity theft prevention, and data security breach protection.
Among its many goals, Data Privacy Day promotes privacy awareness and education among teens and young adults, parents and children, focusing on the privacy issues raised by the use of social networking sites, cell phones, smartphones, online gaming, mobile devices, and other online activities. Please visit the National Cyber Security Alliance for more information and resources.
New York State law requires that businesses and certain public entities report data breaches to the Department of State, the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services' Office of Cyber Security and the Office of the Attorney General. Please visit the Breach Notification Law for more information.
