Firefighter Injured by O2 Explosion during Motor-Home Fire
A Salinas, Calif. firefighter was injured when medical oxygen cylinders in a burning motor home exploded off Route 101. The fire started due to a mechanical problem, forcing the driver to pull off the highway. The cylinders belonged to one of the
passengers who had an unknown medical condition. The firefighter was thrown several feet by the blast, but he only suffered
"bumps and bruises. "

Assessment: Structural and vehicle fires often
present secondary hazards. Unknown contents such
as cylinders of compressed or flammable gasses
should always be considered during operations. Scene
survey and size-up include gathering information
from drivers of vehicles and evacuated occupants of
potential hazards.
