Emergency Preparedness for Kids

Preparedness Kit

Making a preparedness kit will help make sure you’re ready to go in case of an emergency or disaster. Your kit should include:

  • Water
  • Food
  • A jacket
  • First aid items
  • Toothbrush
  • Any medicine you take
  • Flashlight and new batteries
  • Items that are special to you!

And if you have pets, don’t forget to pack for them, too!

Be Prepared in Case of Fire

  • Think ahead! Make sure your smoke detectors work and you have a fire extinguisher in your home – ask an adult to help you.
  • Plan an evacuation route and a meeting place outside so you and your family can be sure to leave safely if needed.
  • If you see a fire in your home, let an adult know immediately.

9-1-1

  • If you need help during an emergency, call 911.
  • Tell the operator your name and where you are.
  • Listen carefully and do what the operator tells you. They are there to help!

Be Safe Online!

  • Use strong passwords.
  • Never give out your personal information to anyone – this includes things like your address and phone number.
  • If something or someone online makes you feel uncomfortable, let an adult know.
