Course Catalog

A Message from the DHSES Training Director (YouTube video)

The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) is committed to providing cutting-edge, contemporary, and configurable training to a broad array of public safety stakeholders statewide. This catalog is designed to share information on the depth and breadth of DHSES' training courses. There are more than 230 courses that are delivered by or coordinated through DHSES.

For more information on any of the courses listed, please reach out directly to the office that offers the course.

The DHSES Training Catalog includes information from its offices and program areas providing and delivering training, to include:

What's Included in the Catalog

The DHSES Training Catalog provides a brief summary of each course the Division has offered at least five times in the past five years. It also includes new courses that have been recently delivered that will become part of DHSES' training offerings on a more regular basis.

The Training Catalog includes the following information:

  • Training Discipline: The primary discipline(s) targeted for each course are highlighted. If a course applies broadly across multiple disciplines, then “multidisciplinary” was selected.
  • Program Area: Each course is linked to a “program area” (e.g., crisis negotiation, mental health) to allow for courses in a given topic area to be quickly identified by catalog end users.
  • Course Name: The official course title is listed
  • Brief Description: A brief synopsis of each course is provided. This synopsis does not represent the full course description for a given course, nor does it include all details regarding course prerequisites or the exact target audience within a given discipline.
  • Number of Hours: The number of hours for each course is listed
  • Delivery Method: Highlights the delivery method(s) for each course. For the purposes of this Training Catalog, the following terms and definitions are utilized:
    • Virtual: A course that is delivered virtually, either through synchronous or asynchronous methods.
    • At SPTC: A course that is delivered in-person, at the SPTC in Oriskany, New York.
    • At Academy of Fire Science (AFS): A course that is delivered in person, at the AFS in Montour Falls, New York.
    • Outreach Delivery: A course that could be delivered by DHSES in your jurisdiction or region. Please note that although the course has the potential to be delivered in your jurisdiction or region, it does not guarantee it will be offered to your area.
  • For More Information: For each course, a primary office or program area within DHSES is identified. Please see the Contacts by Office section above

Important Qualifiers

As you review and use the DHSES Training Calendar, please keep the following qualifiers in mind regarding the content of this resource.

  • Courses Included: As noted above, this catalog does not include every course given by DHSES; rather, it focuses on courses given at least five times in the past five years, along with new courses that will be delivered moving forward.
  • Discipline Targeted: The catalog identifies the primary discipline(s) the course is appropriate for in the first column. However, the column does not specifically identify exact subgroups within a given discipline that the course might be appropriate for. (For example, a course may identify “Law Enforcement” as the targeted discipline, but the course is specifically for Bomb Technicians.) Please refer to other parts of the course description for more details, as needed.
  • Prerequisites: Nearly all the courses contained in the DHSES Training Catalog have defined prerequisites that are required for potential students. These prerequisites are not outlined in this high-level catalog. If you have questions regarding prerequisites for a course, please contact the DHSES office listed in the “For More Information” column in the catalog.
  • Outreach Delivery: As previously noted, this indicates that a course has the potential to be delivered by DHSES in your jurisdiction or region. However, this does not guarantee the course will be offered directly to your area. There are request processes for each course. Please contact the appropriate office for the course you are interested in for more information.
  • Existing Processes: The DHSES Training Catalog does not alter any existing training request processes currently in place. Please utilize these existing processes for course requests and other course correspondence. If you are a new stakeholder to DHSES training and not familiar with these processes, contacts by office are listed above.
