National Certifications

The Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC) is accredited by the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (commonly known as “The Pro Board”) to certify individuals who have met the requirements of the professional qualification standards established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

National certification serves as validation that an individual's training, knowledge and skills meet nationally recognized standards and, by doing so, improve both the application of standardized qualification levels and the recognition and acceptance of training across jurisdictional boundaries.

Individuals may access the Pro Board's Certification Registry to verify their national certifications via the Certification Search link on the Pro Board's web page here: www.theproboard.org. Note that OFPC submits certifications for entry by the Pro Board into the registry quarterly (i.e., on or about January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1) so a delay between issuing a certification and its listing on the national registry may occur.

Agencies seeking to host a national certification examination should submit a request through their County Fire Coordinator's Office by contacting the Standards Unit at the phone number or email provided below.  Exams must be scheduled through the Standards Unit a minimum of 90 days prior to the proposed date of the examination.

Applications MUST be postmarked or received by the Standards Unit no later than 30 days prior to the scheduled exam date. Applicants will receive an admission letter to the exam via U.S. Mail no less than five (5) business days prior to the exam date. If your exam is less than five (5) business days away and you have not received communication regarding the exam please call and speak with a member of the Standards Unit at 518-474-6746.

A Training Authorization Letter is required for those examinations requiring SCBA use if the student is under 18 years of age. This letter should be submitted with the application and is available here: [Training Authorization Letter pdf]

* Verification of completion of live fire skills is a pre-requisite for the Firefighter I and Firefighter II national certification exams. Please download and complete the forms for Firefighter I and Firefighter II.
