RFFT Frequently Asked Questions

Recruit Firefighter Training FAQs

Q: How much does it cost to send a recruit to the RFFT program?

A: Fees for meals and lodging vary based on the exact program length. Current cost as of January 2017 is approximately $1,727 for the 11-week session, plus a materials fee of $1,000. In addition, NYS residents pay a $100 fee for course registration; out-of-state residents are charged $200.

Q: Are my recruits required to stay at the Academy during the week?

A: Yes. Assignment to the Academy is required. Past experience has shown that interaction among the recruits, both inside and outside the classroom/training environment, allows for continuing dialogue with instructors and promotes group study.

Q: What does a standard training day schedule look like?

A: Training begins with PT 06:00 - 07:00, and daily flag-raising ceremony at 07:55. Class begins at 08:00, and may run as late as 21:00. The final training day of each week will end at approximately 17:00.

Q: What topics will require training in my recruits' home department?

A: On the first day of class, each recruit will receive a Probationary Firefighter’s Training Record. The department MTO or Chief is required to complete the top section, and sign where indicated. The department MTO should also complete the “Local Fire Department Rules”, “First Aid”, and “CPR” sections as soon as that training has been provided. The completed Training Record must be returned to the Academy no later than Week 5 of the program. In addition, you will be required to complete a handful of Firefighter I “take-home” skills, such as hose loads and rolls.

Q: What other training documentation is required prior to graduation?

A: Recruits must show proof of the following (i.e., certificates and/or cards) no later than Week 5:

ICS 100

ICS 200

ICS 700

First Aid (expired OK)

CPR (must be current)

Q: What if my recruits are EMT or CFR certified?

A: EMT and CFR (current or expired) meet the requirements for First Aid. Proof of certification must be provided. Recruits must still provide a valid CPR card.

Q: What equipment must my recruits bring with them from the department?

A: Recruits are required to bring a number of items with them to the Academy. Download the list of Recruit FF Equipment Requirements

Q: What NYS OFPC classes (or equivalents) are included in the RFFT program? Will my recruit receive a certificate for completing them?

A: View the list of the NYS courses for which the recruit will receive specific credit and/or a certificate of completion.
