Sparkling devices are popular during the summer holidays but if you think they are safe and harmless, think again. Sparklers burn at temperatures hot enough to melt metal, ignite materials, and cause severe burns. Anyone can be injured with a sparkler if used improperly, but children are especially vulnerable. Here’s how to stay safe:
- Follow local laws. Make sure your sparkler purchase is legal and safe by knowing your local laws.
- Follow directions. Always read and follow the instructions on the sparkler packaging.
- Only use outside. Always use sparklers outdoors in open areas and away from buildings, trees and other flammable materials.
- Watch where you wave. As festive as it seems, waving a sparkler can send sparks flying where they don’t belong.
- Supervise children. Make sure children understand how to handle sparklers safely and never allow them to handle sparklers unsupervised.
- Dress appropriately. Wear close toed shoes and avoid loose clothing.
- Use one sparkler at a time. Lighting multiple sparklers at once increases the risk of injury.
- Don't run or throw sparklers. Avoid horseplay and never throw lit sparklers.
- Keep your distance. Stay at least six (6) feet away from anybody with a sparkler.
- Dispose of sparklers properly. Soak all used and unused sparklers in water and then throw them away in a metal container. A sparkler stick can retain heat and pose a fire risk even after it burns out.
- Keep water close. Keep a source of water handy in case of an emergency.
- Never relight sparklers. Dispose of dud sparklers in a bucket of water. Attempting to reignite them can create a dangerous situation.
- Avoid alcohol. Do not use sparklers while under the influence of alcohol.
- Do not hold children while using sparklers. Maintain a safe distance – at least six (6) feet – between children and lit sparklers.
- Consider alternatives. Consider glow sticks or bubble wands, especially for younger children.
By following these safety precautions, you can minimize risks associated with sparklers and ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration.
