Winterize Your Home

This graphic shows a house with different ways you can winterize your home. Inspect your chimney, clean out gutters, insulate exposed pipes, insulate your attic, install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors (with battery backups), caulk and weather strip doors/windows, and gather supplies. Your home isn't the only one that can be winterized. Your neighbors and those most vulnerable might need your help too!
  • Protect your water pipes from freezing by insulating exposed pipes.
  • Caulk and weather strip all exterior doors and windows.
  • Insulate walls and the attic.
  • Install and test smoke alarms & carbon monoxide detectors on every floor of your home.
  • Have your chimney, wood stove, or heater inspected by a professional annually.

Additional Home Maintenance
  • Service snow removal equipment.
  • DO NOT stick your hands inside a snow blower to clear it!
  • Have rock salt and sand on hand to melt ice on walkways and generate traction.
  • Cut away dead tree branches that could fall on your home during a winter storm.
